About Education Committee

Purpose: The purpose of the Engineering Education Committee is to attract students to civil engineering; to encourage continued professional development, addressing curricula and accreditation; to provide guidance for primary, secondary, and college students; to provide guidance for student chapters; to encourage and guide continuing education; and to promote interaction among educators, practitioners, and engineering technicians.

Organization: The Committee consists of a Chairperson nominated by the Professional Division Chair and appointed by the section president, and other Committee members.  Committee membership also includes an unrestricted number of National Capital Section members who volunteer to work toward the above purpose.

Membership is preferably associated with the five accredited civil engineering universities  assigned to the National Capital Section.  These universities are the University of the District of Columbia, George Washington University, The Catholic University of America, Howard University, and George Mason University.  Representation of the graduate schools, technical institutes and community colleges is appropriate.

Activities: Committee meetings are usually held bimonthly, but may be scheduled at other intervals as needed.  Task force and subcommittee meetings are held according to their own schedule and to meet deadlines established by the Committee.

The Committee keeps informed on civil engineering education in the National Capital area, including professional development, technician programs, and undergraduate and graduate curricula.  The Committee works to improve communication between students and the profession, between practicing professionals and faculty, and between the profession and the public.  The Committee advises local educational institutions on engineering curricula.

The Committee works with the Scholarship Board of Trustees to encourage participation of the students, the faculty advisors, and the universities in the National Capital Section Scholarship Program. The Committee participates directly in the selection process for scholarship awards.
