About Water Resources Committee

Purpose: The purpose of the Water Resources Engineering Committee is to encourage and facilitate the contribution of civil engineers, as individuals and as a profession, toward the improvement of water and related land resources policies, standards, procedures, and decisions affecting the metropolitan area.

Organization: The Committee consists of a chairperson, nominated by the Technical Division chair, and appointed by the Section President.  Committee membership also includes other appointed members and an unrestricted number of Nation Capital Section members who volunteer to work toward the above purpose.  Appointed committee members serve at the discretion of the committee membership at-large.

Activities: In coordination with the Technical Division Chair and other NCS committees, and on matters related to the committee purpose, the activities of the committee includes:

1)  Advising the Board of Directors
2)  Conducting information and education programs for  civil engineers and the public
3) Encouraging research and preparation of papers  for publication  and presentation
4)  Improving the social, environmental, and safety  aspects of engineering
5)   Establishing and presenting the judgment of the NCS  on water resources engineering related issues of  importance to the metropolitan area.

Committee meetings are usually monthly, but may be scheduled at other intervals as needed.  Task force and subcommittee meetings are held according to their own schedule and to meet deadlines established by the full committee.

The committee has sponsored a number of conferences on water resources, providing opportunities to hear and discuss crucial water resources matters with political, administration, and academic leaders in the field.  It has initiated National Capital Section position statements on water resources problems and has presented testimony at public hearings.
