About the NCS Reston Branch

The National Capital Section's Reston Branch hosts regular monthly technical meetings at ASCE Headquarters in Reston at lunch time. Formerly a Committee of the Section, it was, in late October 2017,  anointed a Branch in recognition of its successful track record of serving members from the Reston area with well-attended PDH and networking opportunities. Several Branch Officer positions have opened up for our member volunteers to fill. Take advantage of these emerging leadership opportunities!

During this presentation, Gary Runco - District Structure and Bridge Engineer, will discuss the current state of the NOVA District's structure and bridge inventory. The presentation will highlight the District's current challenges and goals, as well as it's typical operations. Gary will also discuss the status of ongoing projects within the District, as well as future projects to be completed within the District.

About the Presenter: Gary A. Runco, PE, P.S. is currently the District Structure and Bridge Engineer for the VDOT NOVA District. He has been in this role for 5 years. A civil engineer, he earned his degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He has 43 years of experience. His bridge experience includes teaching courses in 26 states and Puerto Rico, for the Federal Highway Administration, on Inspection of Fracture Critical Bridge Members, Culvert Inspection and Bridge Rehabilitation. He is Past President of the Association for Bridge Construction and Design, and serves on the Executive Committee of the International Bridge Conference. He has been active with ASCE including: Past President of the Pittsburgh Section, a Member of the Committee on Continuing Professional Development, Founder and Associate Editor of the ASCE Bridge Journal, and the recipient of the Pittsburgh Section Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award in 1990. His resume also includes 5 years as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh where he taught bridge design. He has authored several papers, and research studies related to bridges as well as a Chapter in an International Design Guide on Inspection of Structural Steel.
